Farnham Town are delighted to announce the return of defender Liam Flanighan, who joins from Chertsey Town of the Southern League Premier South.
Flanighan will be a familiar face to many at The Memorial Ground, having played for the Club during the 2022/23 season, making 22 appearances and scoring four goals including late equalisers both home and away against local rivals Alton.
In the 3-2 win at Sheerwater in November 2022, Flanighan netted an injury-time winner for 10-man Farnham cementing the first away league victory for Paul Johnson as manager, with the Town still unbeaten in away league fixtures ever since – a run of 30 games.
After starting 21 of the first 27 games of the season, he suffered a season-ending injury which cut short his time with the Town. In the 2023/24 campaign, Liam made the step back up with Chertsey Town and was a key player for the Curfews making 41 appearances as they went on to be crowned champions of the Isthmian South Central – the league Farnham Town will be competing in this coming season following our own promotion.
Flanighan opted to leave Chertsey over the summer following their promotion to Step 3 and will be looking to help the Town enjoy similar success this coming season.
Capable of playing both centre-back and left-back, Flanighan offers excellent quality cover and competition at multiple positions across the back four.
Manager Paul Johnson said: “I wish we had seen more of Liam when he was with us a couple of seasons ago. He impressed in those early games before getting injured, and we felt his absence. He went to Chertsey last season and was a regular in their impressive defence as they ended up running away with the league title, and we hope that success will help us this season.
“We were in the market for a couple of additions and when Liam became available we were very interested in bringing him back. His quality at both centre-back and left-back will be important for us throughout the season. Bringing in another player who has been there and done it, achieved promotions, will only be a good thing for our group and we’re all excited to see him back in the Claret & Blue.”
Liam comes straight into the group and will be in contention to make his second debut for the Club when we travel to Badshot Lea for our Isthmian South Central opener on August 10th.
