Farnham Town confirm the signing of Mat Mackenzie from Hanwell Town

Farnham Town are delighted to confirm the arrival of sought-after midfielder Mat Mackenzie from fellow Southern League Premier South side Hanwell Town for an undisclosed fee.

The 22-year-old rose up the levels quickly as a teenager, breaking through at Redhill in the Combined Counties Premier South before moving on to South Park in the Isthmian South Central in February 2022 where he continued to make a name for himself in local non-League circles.

Hanwell Town spotted his potential and they brought him to the Club during the summer of 2022 where he quickly established himself as one of the best young players in the Southern League. His debut season with Hanwell saw Mat reel in the Club’s Supporter’s, Committee’s and Young Player of the Season award for the 2022/23 campaign.

Over the last two seasons, he further cemented himself as one of the first names on the teamsheet at Hanwell, and eclipsed 100 career appearances for the Club in March 2025 en route to finishing out a strong season, finishing eighth in the Southern League Premier South.

Believed to have a big future in the game, we’re thrilled to be able to agree terms with Mat to join the Town this summer following the expiry of his contract with Hanwell Town, and we’d like to thank everyone at the Geordies for ensuring a smooth process to formalise the transfer.

Discussing Mat’s arrival, Manager Paul Johnson said: “Once promotion was confirmed, we started drawing up a list of summer targets and Mat was right at the top of that list. He’s a player we’ve been tracking for a long time and have always liked the look of.

“With his age and his situation at Hanwell, it wasn’t as straight-forward a deal to make as some of our other signings this summer, but credit to everyone involved with both Clubs to find a solution.

“He’s got a big frame, he’s athletic, and he’s excellent on the ball. He’s going to add something different to our midfield options and I’m looking forward to working with Mat.”

Chairman Harry Hugo adds: “This was an interesting deal for us to work on! Even though he was a ‘free agent’, Hanwell were due compensation for their role in his development which took some time to agree on but I’m pleased we got there – and thanks to everyone at Hanwell for working with us on that.

“Mat was one of the first players Paul singled out to us as someone he was very keen to bring in this summer. He’s young, but he’s got good experience of the level having already racked up well over 100 appearances during his three years with Hanwell.

“From speaking to Mat, he’s a very grounded individual and loves his football. He’s going to be a huge asset for us next season and hopefully beyond. I’m delighted to welcome him to the Farnham Town family.”

Mat is the Club’s sixth new signing of the summer following our promotion to the Southern League Premier South, joining Ogo Obi, Bobby-Joe Taylor, Brandon Mason, Imran Uche and Tom Leggett.
