Joel Freeland kicked off his sporting career as a kid playing for Farnham Town F.C, managed at the time by his father. Joel played for Farnham up until the age of about 14 when he experienced a serious leg break playing in a local football tournament for The Town. With his confidence knocked on the football field and an above average height Joel standing at 6’11 was advised to give basketball a go by his school teacher at Farnham Heathend. At the age of just 18 Joel would become the first ever British born player to be 1st round draft pick after being scooped up by Portland Trail Blazers in the NBA.
Farnham born Freeland went one to have an extremely successful playing career playing for Portland Trail Blazers, Team GB, Malaga, Gran Caneria and CSKA Moscow competing against the likes of Lebron James and Steph Curry.
Following his retirement from the game Joel now makes a return to his childhood club where he will take up the role of an ambassador and have involvement in helping the club grow and improve its impact within the local community. Be sure to catch Joel watching fixtures down at The Memorial Ground!
