Flares Prepare For A New Season Of Walking Football

This Season Sees Over 50 & Over 60 Sides In League & Cup Action.

Earlier this week, Farnham Flares, Farnham Town’s walking football team, prepared for the season ahead with a series of tough friendlies away at Aldershot Retro Rangers and at home to league and cup holders, Godalming.

First up on Monday, the Flares put out two mixed aged teams from their ‘Shadow Squad’ to play the vastly more experienced Retro Rangers over four, keenly contested, matches.

Although the Farnham Flares ‘Red Team’ was the more successful, winning one match and drawing the other, the ‘Yellow Team’ also performed well in defeat, particularly for a side that is only just coming together.

On Tuesday, the Over 50 and Over 60 teams were in action against Godalming.

As the current league and cup holders, Godalming represented a serious test for Farnham’s ambitions this season, and, based on these performances, it’s fair to say that the Flares look likely to be chasing them hard.

In their two matches, the Farnham Flares Over 50 team lost 1-0 and drew 1 -1.

The latter result was extremely unfortunate, as the referee missed an infringement for the Godalming equaliser and, if the Flares had been able to hold out for the win, this would have been the first time that Farnham had ever beaten Godalming and would have shown a serious demonstration of their intent for the coming season!

The Over 60s, playing together for only the second time, put up similarly impressive performances.

Although they lost both games 1–0, the Flares made their vastly more experienced opponents work hard for their victories.  The first coming with a goal scored when the Flares were reduced to five men, and the second thanks to a goal scored when the Flares were forced to make a substitution.

Four fine performances made possible by the support of Flares’ sponsor, Farnham coffee shop, Coffee Diem.

The Farnham Flares Walking Football Team are always looking to welcome new players.
