Match Report: Farnham Town 2 Badshot Lea 1

A Brace From Shamal Edwards Seals Derby Day Win For Farnham Town.

This was the game that the Town really wanted to win.

And they did so with a high intensity, battling performance that ‘left nothing out on the pitch’.

Up against their promotion chasing arch rivals, the Farnham Town starting eleven saw yet another new face in the back four, with Bradley Kauzani coming in at right back, and the adaptable Max Meaton moving across to partner Patrick Campbell in the centre of defence as the Town looked to make up for the previous week’s disappointing defeat to bottom of the table Frimley Green.

A record crowd of over 1,000 packed into the Memorial Ground made for a cracking atmosphere, and, if anyone in the Town team had any nerves, they were quickly settled by a fine opening goal from Shamel Edwards inside the first three minutes.

Latching on to Lewis Flatman’s chip forward, Edwards outpaced his defender, ran into the area, and took his shot early and across the Badshot Lea ‘keeper, who will probably be disappointed that he didn’t get down quicker and, at least, get something on the shot.

This time a punt forward down the middle of the park from Max Meaton was headed on by Lewis Flatman for Edwards to run between two defenders and strike another early shot past the Badshot Lea ‘keeper, and into the top left corner.

A well taken goal, but, again, questions could be asked of the Badshot Lea defence.

Despite these two setbacks, Badshot Lea were still very much in the game, and they would be rewarded in the 23rd minute when a cross from Kane Fitzgerald, the Farnham Town skipper at the start of the season, was headed home by Tane Caubo.

The first half would play out with chances at both ends, the best falling to Lewis Flatman whose shot was well saved at the near post.

The second half was a similar story, with the visitors probably just shading it in terms of possession and chances created.

Yet, although the Town were on the back foot, there were few moments of genuine concern as the new back four, supported by solid shifts from a hard-working midfield, continued to frustrate a Badshot Lea side desperately seeking points for their promotion push.

In fact, the first real chance wouldn’t come until two minutes from time, and it fell to the Town’s Lewis Flatman who, pouncing on nothing more than a half chance, turned his man in the area and forced a fine near post save from the ‘keeper.

And then, almost immediately, came the chance that Badshot Lea craved.

A long free kick floated into the area was missed by Lamar Koroma who could only turn and watch as Farnham ‘keeper Liam Harris bailed him out by saving with his feet from the Badshot Lea full back who almost certainly was unused to being in that position.

Have Farnham finally broken their home hoodoo?

Three points gained against a side firmly in the promotion places certainly suggests so.

However, the Town now take on Midhurst & Easebourne in the Aldershot Senior Cup at home on Tuesday night (07 March – 7:45pm kick off) before facing three consecutive away fixtures, including league games against Cobham and high-flying Jersey Bulls and the results from these games will give everyone a better idea of exactly where we are.
